Narva 1700: A Black Powder Scenario

Background

Sweden's 18 year old king Charles XII has reacted speedily to the surprise offensive launched by his envious neighbours Denmark, Saxony, Poland and Russia. A lightning offensive has already forced the Danes to sue for peace and now the king has raced to engage the Russians, who are besieging the double fortress of Narva-Ivangorod on the empire's eastern border.

The large Russian army, led by Charles Eugene de Croy, has taken up positions along a long line of circumvallations while the siege of Narva-Ivangorod proceeds. The Russian army is freshly raised and poorly trained, and is suffering from lack of supply due to the prolonged siege and lateness of the season (November). However, De Croy is confident in the strength of his fortifications and does not expect an attack by the Swedes, as this would entail a risky and gruelling march across the ravaged and frozen Baltic countryside. However, this is exactly what Charles XII intends.

Grenades: Negate fortification morale bonus modifier in combat

Note: The Swedes had large contingents of cavalry at Narva, which are left out from this scenario. The cavalry could not assault the Russian fortifications and their main role was to protect the infantry's flanks and tie down Russian defenders on both wings. The Russian reinforcement roll (see later) reflects how well the Swedish cavalry succeed in their mission.

Note: This represents only that portion of the Russian army facing the Swedes' point of attack. The majority (including the best units) are on the flanks but can only be brought on gradually (see reinforcement rules) as the Russian high command realises what is going on and the units can be freed from the flanks.

Terrain

Camps, woods:
Rough going, cover, -1 to command if trying to move through or out of terrain (neither side wants to abandon the plunder in the camps)

Fortifications:
+2 morale vs. shooting. +1 morale vs combat. +2 combat result and can gain 1 support (for total maximum +3)

Scenario Special Rules

Snowstorm:
At the start of the game, all shooting suffers a -2 modifier to hit. At the end of each turn, roll a die. On 4-6 the snowstorm calms down. After it calms down there is a -1 modifier to hit, which can further calm down so that there are no modifiers.

Reinforcements:
Starting on round 4, the Russians roll one die for the left flank and one die for the right flank. On the roll of 6 a reinforcement unit enters the table from that flank. The unit can be attached to any Division (but does not increase its size for purposes of broken brigades). When it enters the unit makes one move and then stops. It can’t fire or assault on the turn it enters.

Commands:
No “With Me” commands

Period Special Rules

Formations:
Attack columns and mixed formation are not allowed. A column can change into line only with a left face or right face command.

Move & fire:
Units can’t fire if they have made more than one move in a turn.

Interpenetration:
If a unit’s centre moves through another unit, roll a die for each unit. On 4+ that unit is disordered.

Victory Conditions

The Swedes must break the Russian army and/or hold point A or B (see map below).

The game lasts 8 turns.
